We aim to provide clinical advice and facilitate the timely management of patients with acute hand, wrist and microsurgical injuries throughout Queensland and Northern NSW. This service is available to referring Practitioners & Emergency Departments, and your call will be answered by the oncall hand surgeon.
EACH MEMBER OF THIS SERVICE:
• Has undertaken additional post-fellowship training in well regarded interstate or international hand surgery units.
• Has a clinical practice dedicated exclusively to conditions of the hand and upper limb.
• Maintains a public hospital commitment at one of the two major tertiary hand units in Brisbane (RBWH or PAH).
• Maintains an appointment at a major Brisbane private hospital.
• Is an active member of the Australian Hand Surgery Society.

Dr Frederiksen is an upper limb orthopaedic surgeon specialising in surgery of the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand including microvascular and peripheral nerve surgery. He has special interest in the management of complex upper limb trauma, and in particular the complex reconstruction of severely injured limbs.
Dr Frederiksen graduated from the University of Queensland in 1997. He undertook employment as a junior doctor at the Royal Brisbane Hospital before entering full time service in the Royal Australian Air Force in 2000. Within the RAAF, Dr Frederiksen worked in a number of roles, including humanitarian assistance and overseas deployments to areas such as the Solomon Islands, East Timor, Indonesia (Bali) and the Middle East.
Dr Frederiksen completed his training in January 2009 and commence a period of full time public practice at the QEII Hospital in Brisbane. In July 2010, Dr Frederiksen travelled to Auckland for twelve months of focussed training in surgery of the hand, wrist and elbow, including microvascular and peripheral nerve surgery. This work was based in the Orthopaedic Hand Unit, embedded within the Plastic Surgical Department at Middlemore Hospital.
Dr Frederiksen maintains public practice at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and participates in both upper limb and hand and microvascular call rosters. He regularly visits other centres to maintain his skills and knowledge and actively participates in the training of junior orthopaedic surgeons.
Dr Frederiksen consults at Brisbane Private Hospital, BSEMS Hawthorne and Bundaberg and operates at St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital, Spring Hill.

Dr Gervais studied medicine at the Queen’s University of Belfast. After completing his undergraduate degree, he undertook basic surgical training in the UK. He subsequently moved to live in Australia and completed advanced orthopaedic training in Queensland. He was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons in 2008.
He undertook further sub specialist training in hand and peripheral nerve surgery at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney and Westmead Children’s Hospital. He specialises in upper limb surgery. His sub-speciality interests include hand trauma, peripheral nerve surgery and congenital upper-limb conditions.
Dr Gervais works at St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital and North West Private Hospitals. He also works at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital where he participates in the hand and micro vascular on call roster. A large portion of his practice involves acute hand and upper limb trauma.
He also works at Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital where he focuses on paediatric hand trauma and congenital hand conditions. Dr Gervais has a keen interest in upper limb spasticity and is involved with upper limb surgery in patients with cerebral palsy, as well as spasticity that may develop as a consequence of stroke and head injuries.

Dr. Benjamin Hope is an Orthopaedic surgeon specializing in surgery of the hand upper limb.
Dr Hope graduated with an MB,BS degree (Hons) from the University of Tasmania in 2000. After relocating to Queensland in his intern year, he began Orthopaedic training in 2006. He obtained fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, in Orthopaedic surgery in 2009.
Deciding to focus on the hand and upper limb, he was accepted into the prestigious Sydney Hospital and St Lukes fellowship and completed 12 months further training in surgery of the hand and wrist. Extensive microvascular experience, alongside some of the best microsurgeons in Australia, was one of the highlights of this valuable time.
After leaving Sydney at the end of 2010, he completed a fellowship in shoulder surgery at the Instituo Clinico Humanitas, in Milan, alongside renowned shoulder surgeon Dr Alessandro Castagna in 2011. Dr. Hope competed his subspecialty training, in upper limb surgery, by then spending 6 months as a fellow in the Princess Alexandra Hospital upper limb unit in 2011.
He joined the unit as a consultant surgeon in 2012. Since 2012 Dr. Hope has maintained a public appointment at Princess Alexandra Hospital and is in private practice as a member of the Hand and Upper Limb Clinic, based at Brisbane Private Hospital. In addition, Dr. Hope has regular lists at the Wesley Hospital as well as consulting and operating at the Mater Redlands Hospital.

Andrew undertook Orthopaedic training in Queensland. He has a special interest in upper limb surgery.
Andrew grew up in Adelaide before completing his medical qualifications in Sydney at the University of New South Wales. He spent his years as a junior doctor and Orthopaedic trainee in Queensland.
He undertook a Masters of Engineering at Queensland University of Technology in Orthopaedic research. In 2012 he completed his Orthopaedic training becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
Andrew then began sub-speciality training by undertaking Fellowships in upper limb surgery at the Royal Brisbane Hospital in 2013 and in Bristol, United Kingdom in 2014. Training in all aspects of hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder surgery. He then returned to Queensland in late 2014 working as a staff specialist Orthopaedic surgeon at Redcliffe Hospital and the Royal Brisbane and Womens’ Hospital.
From mid-2015 to mid 2016 Andrew underwent further sub-specialty training in hand surgery at the Auckland regional Plastic Reconstructive and Hand Surgery Unit based at Middlemore Hospital. He completed The Australian Hand Surgery Society Post-Fellowship Education and Training in Hand Surgery in February 2017.
His practice is focussed on conditions of the upper extremity including the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder. Andrew is currently the Director of Orthopaedics at the Royal Brisbane and Womens’ Hospital and also treats public patients at The Prince Charles Hospital.
Andrew is happy to treat traumatic injuries (including fractures, tendon, ligament, nerve and vessel) of the upper limb He currently sees private patients at Brisbane Private Hospital and operates at Brisbane Private, St Andrews War Memorial, Mater Private (South Brisbane) and North West Private Hospitals.

Dr McEniery is an orthopaedic upper limb surgeon practicing at St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital and the Royal Brisbane Hospital.
Paul attended the University of Queensland, completed the Queensland orthopaedic training program in 2011 and undertook further post fellowship training in hand, microsurgery and peripheral nerve surgery at Royal North Shore and Westmead Children’s Hospital in 2013. Paul has served as a reserve medical officer in the Australian Army.
Paul maintains a long term public commitment at the Royal Brisbane Hospital where he participates in the hand and microvascular oncall roster and attends the orthopaedic hand and upper limb clinic. Paul’s scope of practice includes hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder surgery with an additional interest in brachial plexus / peripheral nerve surgery and complex hand / wrist injuries including soft tissue coverage / reconstruction with local and regional flaps. Paul has an active interest in medicolegal reporting and is an independent medical examiner.
Paul operates privately at St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital and consults in Spring Hill and Carina.
